Heijmans NV (AMS:HEIJM) Sustainable energy system for Buurtstede residential district ''s-Hertogenbosch - Heijmans Infrastructure was selected by Duurzame Energie Veenendaal-Oost (DEVO) to design and build a sustainable energy facility for the new Buurtstede residential district in Veenendaal Oost. The award also includes a thirty-year maintenance contract. Residents are expected to save at least 15 percent on their energy bills as a result of the energy system. The contract is valued at over € 21 million, including a thirty-year maintenance contract valued at over €10 million.
DEVO is a grouping between the municipality of Veenendaal and Quattro-energie. Heijmans was selected on the basis of its concept's high energy performance and the relatively low energy costs. Instead of connecting to the national gas network, the concept proposed the development of a local heating/cooling network for Buurtstede with a heat/cold storage capability. All 1,214 homes will be equipped with a warm water connection and connections to the heating and cooling systems. Four wells will be drilled within the district's green zone for heat/cold energy storage. During the winter, the available cold energy will be stored in two underground wells, using water. This will be used to cool the houses in the district during the summer. Water warmed up during the summer months is stored in the other two wells and is used as a source for heating during the winter.
In comparison to traditional facilities, the energy system results in a 60 percent CO2 reduction. The annual efficiency of the energy plant in terms of the delivery of heat is 179 percent, twice as much as a high efficiency combination boiler. In terms of cooling, this represents a tenfold gain in efficiency over that of traditional air conditioning. Work will be initiated this fall and the project must be completed by mid 2010.
