There is nothing else like it in the market today.”
— Henry Heine, BSL3 Program Director at the University of Florida State.
TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES, October 24, 2023 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Safe-Decon Inc. has developed a groundbreaking new method for containment, control, and elimination of biohazard waste and contaminated materials. Using a patented, custom engineered, sealed container to reduce exposure risk, improve efficiency, and control costs, the Safe-Decon Bio Pro system has been shown in research trials to kill pathogens such as Covid-19 more reliably than current methods.

After Safe-Decon CEO Bobbie Dudley had to inform his wife that the both of them may have been exposed to deadly pathogens due to failed decontamination, he set out to improve the process so that it wouldn’t ever happen again. Current methods require long decontamination cycles, consuming more energy and producing more environmental waste, and having no way to monitor the contaminants during the process. “The only way to know for sure we’ve killed it,” Dudley says, “is to run the autoclave for anywhere from 4 to 9 hours, and even then, we just don’t know.”

To solve this, Dudley designed the Safe-Decon Bio Pro system, a reusable, purpose-built container that can be placed directly in a laboratory autoclave. The patented Bio Pro container allows for real time temperature monitoring, ensuring that the correct temperatures are reached during decontamination. The Bio Pro unit improves efficiency through an automated valve on the container which opens when the autoclave reaches temperature, allowing the steam to flow directly into the container. This significantly reduces the time required for the material to reach the necessary temperature for decontamination. The valve will then reseal once the cycle is complete, or should there be a malfunction in the autoclave, ensuring that the contaminated load remains safe to handle. “This will save lives,” Dudley states.

“The Safe-Decon containers…allow the exchange of air to steam required to achieve the required temperature to inactivate spores, the most difficult challenge in the sterilization process.” Says Henry Heine, BSL3 Program Director at the University of Florida State. “There is nothing else like it in the market today.” Over 3 years of development and nearly 900 tests performed at the University of Florida and Yale, the system was found to achieve total sterilization of contaminated materials, including pathogens such as Ebola and HIV.

In addition to safety, Dudley notes that Bio Pro system will, cut costs and reduce the environmental impact of decontamination. According to Mr. Dudley’s findings, when compared to the Bio Pro system, a single decontamination cycle currently requires 140-200 gallons of water and consumes up to 200-500% more energy. The Bio Pro system can achieve total decontamination during a single 60-minute autoclave cycle, reducing time but up to 8 hours and energy costs by 75% on average.

During the recent Covid-19, hospitals struggled to keep up with decontamination of waste, sharps, liquid and hospital laundry. “In Covid-19 isolation rooms,” Dudley reflects. “The Bio Pro system could have been a lifesaver.” In tests at Albany Medical Center, Sephen Higgens, Manager of Laboratory Operations, notes, “Not only is the Safe-Decon box, safe, but it drastically reduces the load on our decades old Getinge steam sterilizer. Cutting down significantly on sterilization times will allow for more users per day as well, upping productivity within the Department.”
