Brisbane, Mar 3, 2008 (ABN Newswire) - Internationally renowned for recognising and rewarding best practice in the restoration and management of river systems around the world, the Thiess Riverprize Awards are the most to get their entries in, with nominations for the Thiess Riverprize Awards closing on 28 March 2008.
The Thiess Riverprize is an initiative of Riverfestival in partnership with the International Riverfoundation. The International Riverfoundation provides the generous prize money for this award whilst the Riverfestival manages the award and produces the prize ceremony.
The Thiess Riverprize Awards, now valued at AU $500,000, offers the highest monetary award of river management prizes, and global recognition at the annual International Riversymposium in Brisbane, Australia (1 - 4 September 2008). All international and national finalists are invited to present their projects at the Riversymposium which attracts more than 600 participants, from over 50 countries, at all levels of river management - government, science, industry, environmental and community groups. Winners will be awarded their prize during a special gala ceremony at the Symposium.
There are two awards and Australian river and catchment management groups may enter both the International Thiess Riverprize valued this year at AU $350,000 and National Thiess Riverprize valued at AU $150,000.
International judging panel Chair, Professor Paul Greenfield, says the Thiess Riverprize Awards offer organisations committed to water sustainability a unique opportunity to take action on their river rescue ideas.
"The prize recognises best practice in the restoration and preservation of waterways worldwide, with past entries coming from Australia, U.S.A, China, Canada and Europe. Like many countries, Australia is in the grip of a water crisis and now more than ever, it is encouraging to see projects both here and overseas combining science, public policy and community action to address river health.

2008 marks the 10th anniversary of the Thiess Riverprize Awards which have evolved into one of the most highly regarded and richest international river management awards worldwide. Since its establishment in 1999, the prize has been awarded to 16 international and Australian organisations and community groups.
