Australian Market Report of July 22: Winning Streak Continues

Wall Street posted modest gains on Tuesday in choppy trade as investors started to be cautious after the recent rallies inspired by earnings results. In addition, US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said in testimony the pace of decline appears to have slowed significantly, but the financial system remained stressed and the labour market had continued to deteriorate.

On Wednesday Tokyo and Hong Kong markets bounced 4 per cent respectively in the morning following Wall Street's hefty overnight rally. Taiwan stocks rose 2.04 percent to a two-month high led by financial stocks after Citigroup said it turned profitable in the first two months in 2009.

Asian Markets Overview of February 23

Asian markets ended sharply lower Friday, weighed down by the weakness in the US and European markets. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average fell 1.9% as investors were still not comfortable with the recent falls of Japanese yen, but the slumping Korean won hurt shares in Seoul with the Kospi plummeted 3.7%. Shanghai and Hong Kong stocks gained about 1.5%. Today the Chinese shares opened slightly weaker while the Hong Kong shares were up 1.8 percent.

Australian Market Report of December 22: A Flat Week Expected

On Friday, the Australian market closed marginally higher with rise on most sectors except energy stocks. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index gained 34.5 points, or 0.96 per cent, at 3,615.7, while the broader All Ordinaries index rose 25.5 points, or 0.72 per cent, to 3,547.2. Low trading volumes are expected this week.
