2016 Constructech Vision Awards Honor 3 Aconex Customers

San Francisco, Sep 22, 2016 AEST (ABN Newswire) - Aconex Ltd (googlechartASX:ACX), a global leader of digital innovation in construction, today announced that three of its customers in North America have won 2016 Constructech Vision Awards. The annual Vision Awards recognize companies that apply leading-edge solutions on forward-thinking projects, turning a challenge into an opportunity through the use of ground-breaking technology.

The Aconex customers - Graham, Ledcor Technical Services and the University of Alaska Fairbanks - accepted their awards at the Constructech Vision Awards dinner following the Technology Day event on August 18 in Schaumburg, Illinois. Constructech also recognized Aconex as the technology provider behind its customers' award-winning projects.

"It takes more than just having the latest technology to stay ahead of the game," said Peggy Smedley, editorial director, Constructech. "This year's Vision Award winners are demonstrating that they are reinventing how solutions are used, and are capturing a competitive advantage that will set them apart for years to come."

Graham - North Island Hospitals Project

Gold Award - Builder/GC Commercial More than $500 million

One of Canada's largest construction companies, Graham serves as the primary design-build contractor for the North Island Hospitals Project, a public-private partnership (P3) that includes Tandem Health Partners; Balfour Beatty Investments; Connor, Clark & Lunn Tradition Infrastructure; Gracorp Capital Advisors; and the Vancouver Island Health Authority, the project owner. Valued at C$606.2 million, the P3 project involves the concurrent construction of two acute care hospitals at two different sites on northern Vancouver Island. The project team includes more than 750 individuals from 155 different organizations. Project requirements include compliance with clean building specifications and accommodations for highly specialized equipment and instrumentation. Graham faces significant financial penalties if the facilities' target date for service commencement was not met. Graham had deployed Aconex on a number of projects previously and developed best practices for P3 use of the platform.

By using Aconex on the North Island Hospitals Project, Graham achieved the following quantitative process improvements:

- Reduced tender solicitation cycles by 90% from an entire day to an hour or less for 32 tender packages and 202 tender invitations.

- Reduced turnaround time for requests for information (RFIs) by 50%, saving administrative head count totaling approximately C$60,000 per year.

- Reduced the time required to log and distribute defects to subcontractors by 80-85% per defect, from 15 minutes to two minutes or less, through the use of Aconex Field, a mobile inspection solution.

Ledcor Technical Services - KentuckyWired Broadband Network

Silver Award - Builder/GC Commercial More than $500 million

Ledcor Technical Services (LTS), a division of the Canada-based Ledcor Group of Companies, has been building and servicing communications networks across North America since 1979. LTS and its design-build joint venture partner, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company Black & Veatch, are currently leading a P3 project to construct and operate KentuckyWired, a broadband network covering the entire state of Kentucky. Valued at US$275 million, the project consists of more than 3,300 miles of fiber optic cable, traversing all 120 of the state's counties, connecting approximately 1,100 government and public facilities, and providing private-sector access as well. In addition to network design and construction, LTS will operate and maintain KentuckyWired for 30 years from the date of service commencement. Project stakeholders are located in Vancouver, British Columbia; the Kansas City, Missouri area, where Black & Veatch is based; San Antonio, Texas; Lexington, Kentucky; and all construction sites throughout the state. Compliance requirements for the confidentiality and security of project data and communications are strict.

Connecting this team on Aconex, LTS is realizing the following project benefits:

- Reduced the number of document controllers from four on projects of similar size to less than one full-time equivalent, saving approximately US$600,000 over the 2.5-year life of the project.

- Reduced change request process cycles by a minimum of 80%, from two weeks or more to two days and sometimes even minutes.

- Reduced the average time required to search for and access a document or drawing by 95%, from two hours to five minutes or less.

- Expects to achieve massive efficiencies in network operation and maintenance over 30 years through the use of Aconex metadata tags created during the construction process.

University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) - Atkinson Heat and Power Plant Upgrade

Silver Award - Corporate Owner, Education

The University of Alaska Fairbanks was the state of Alaska's first university and manages billions of dollars of state infrastructure. Much of this infrastructure depends on the Atkinson Heat and Power Plant, which provides electricity, heating and cooling for some 170 academic, research, office, and residential buildings totaling approximately three million square feet. Installed in 1964, the main boilers at the plant are nearing the end of their useful life, causing increasing maintenance costs, performance issues and the risk of catastrophic failure, which would be financially devastating to the university and the state. Valued at $245 million, the plant and system upgrade project consists of a coal-fired boiler with a capacity of up to 240,000 pounds of steam per hour, as well as a steam turbine that will generate low-pressure steam to heat the campus and produce 17 megawatts of electricity. The project team is expected to include more than 150 organizations from China, Japan, Mexico, Canada, the U.S., and Europe.

Managing this project on Aconex, the university has measurably improved the following processes:

- Accelerated data, document and drawing searches by two hours per month per team member, resulting in a total project savings of approximately $150,000.

- Reduced processes within design review cycles by as much as 75% and the length of design review meetings by 30%, saving approximately 500 hours during the design phase of the project. Design review meetings that had previously required two days now take as little as half a day, as a result of information access and automated workflow management.

- Significantly reduced data entry for daily reports and eliminated errors through automated reporting capabilities.

"Graham, Ledcor and the University of Alaska have led by example in driving successful project delivery through digital innovation," said Chris Dobbyn, senior vice president of the Americas at Aconex. "We are pleased with the opportunity to partner with them and deliver value that has real financial impact."
