Adelaide, Mar 30, 2006 AEST (ABN Newswire) - Federal Resources Minister, Mr Ian Macfarlane, made the following key points at the 2006 Uranium Conference in Adelaide today.

- Around the world, uranium is coming in from the cold. As the international community struggles to meet economic development and the challenge of global warming, nuclear power presents another viable energy option.

- Developing economies like China are eager to buy Australian uranium because they consider nuclear energy as a reliable and clean source of energy.

- Where uranium is concerned, Australia is punching below its weight. We hold 37% of the world's low cost uranium resources, worth about $100 billion Australian dollars at today's prices. Yet, we continue to lag behind Canada. We remain in second place as a producer of low-cost uranium, even though we have more than twice Canada's reserves. The Government is committed to addressing this discrepancy.

- For many Australians, uranium remains a mysterious substance. It is up to the uranium industry to help inform the uranium debate and to demonstrate the many benefits uranium mining brings to Australia by transparently presenting the issues and facilitating dialogue where opportunities arise.

Mr Macfarlane's address was delivered by Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources Head of Resources Division, Mr John Hartwell.
