PÖYRY AWARDED CONSULTANCY SERVICES FOR REHABILITATION OF RURAL ROADS IN ZANZIBAR

Pöyry has been awarded a consultancy contract by the Ministry of Communications and Transport of Zanzibar for rehabilitation of the rural roads on Pemba Island. The value of the contract is about EUR 1.0 million. The project is funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.

Pöyry's services comprise management of on-site supervision and quality control of the rehabilitation works, and supervision of quality assurance testing of materials and works. In addition, Pöyry will prepare an environmental assessment of the proposed rehabilitation works to ensure that the options considered are environmentally sound and sustainable. Also theoretical and on-the-job training and inspection of the finalised works are included in the assignment. Pöyry will provide the services in association with Intech Beusch & Co, Switzerland.

The Government of Zanzibar places high priority on efforts to improve infrastructure facilities and management of the road sector on Pemba Island. Rural roads in Pemba are generally in need of rehabilitation on a large scale due to insufficient maintenance over a long period of time. The project objective is to complete 41 km of rehabilitated rural roads within three years, and enhanced management capacity of the Department of Roads through an improved and implemented management system, and training and enhanced resources for rural roads maintenance.
