The Australian share market was lower in early trade as Wall Street plunged overnight on Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke's comment that the economy was fragile. The US central bank is not prepared to consider further stimulus in the near term despite an "unusually uncertain" outlook.

Santos (ASX:STO) shares on Monday defied the market sell-off after the company said it had executed a A$2 billion bilateral bank loan facility. The new facility will be used to refinance its existing A$700 million of undrawn bilateral bank facilities that mature between 2011 and 2013 and to increase liquidity.

The Australian market shrugged off Wall Street's negative lead and opened firmer this morning on optimism over US economy. Financials and mining stocks led the market rise. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index gained 0.58 per cent, while All Ordinaries rose 0.71 per cent in early trade.
