Beach Petroleum Limited's (ASX:BPT)(PINK:BEPTF) Butlers-1, the third well of a planned six well oil exploration program in PEL 92 is to be cased and suspended after intersecting a 4.5 metre oil column in high quality reservoir at the top of the Namur Sandstone. Butlers-1 is the second successive oil discovery in the current drilling campaign.

Last Friday, the Australian shares ended higher for the first time in a week. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index gained 7.5 points, or 0.19 per cent, to 3,899.6 points, and the broader All Ordinaries index advanced 7 points, or 0.18 per cent, at 3894.4 points.

Yesterday, the Australian market slumped for the third consecutive session as investors locked in gains from recent rallies. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was 58.4 points, or 1.47 per cent lower, at 3,904.1 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index fell 53.7 points, or 1.36 per cent, at 3,904.2 points.

Yesterday the Australian share market ended lower. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 fell 36.3 points yesterday, or 0.91 per cent, at 3934.9, while the broader All Ordinaries was down 35.4 points, or 0.89 per cent, to 3933.6. Overnight the stronger commodities prices in New York may boost the local market today.

The Australian market rose through the 4,000 level on Wednesday, led by property stocks as data showed the economy had avoided a recession. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 surged 61.9 points, or 1.56 per cent, to 4,017.2, while the broader All Ordinaries was 61.2 points, or 1.55 per cent higher, at 4,009.3.
