Wall Street closed higher overnight on investors' buying in industrial and materials stocks. Meanwhile, the fears of trade dispute between the US and China was offset by the news that a Chinese wealth fund is in talks to take over a minority stake in the US power plant AES.
Overnight Wall Street fell following a massive sell-off in Chinese shares, which plunged 6.7 per cent on Monday. The Shanghai Composite index has lost more than 20% of its value in one month.
Wall Street finished higher in choppy trade as the upbeat economic data in Europe offset the news of disappointing retail sales in US. Wal-Mart's second-quarter earnings, above analyst's expectations, also helped to lift the market.
US stocks surged overnight as the Federal Reserve said the economy was leveling out, and it left interest rates unchanged at the end of its two-day policy meeting.
US stocks rose on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank is winding down its emergency lending programs established to end the financial crisis.
The Australian market closed firmer yesterday on stronger commodities prices and good leads from overseas markets. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index rose 49.5 points, or 1.24 per cent, at 4050.3 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index gained 51.3 points, or 1.28 per cent, to 4044.2 points.
Australian shares yesterday gained on the rise of Wall Street. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 gained 71.1 points, or 1.8 per cent, at 3995.6, while the broader All Ordinaries had gained 70.3 points, or 1.8 per cent, to 3987.8.
Yesterday Australian shares slightly fell on weaker base metal prices. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index dropped 16.8 points, or 0.4 per cent, at 3766.9 points while the broader All Ordinaries index had shed 16.4 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 3767.8.
On Friday Asian and European markets fell while Wall Street was closed for public Holiday. The Australian shares closed lower Friday as US shares tumbled on the unfavorable unemployment figures and commodities prices were also lower. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index lost 49.1 points, or 1.27 per cent, to 3828.2 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index slumped 48.6 points, or 1.25 per cent, at 3826.6 points. The Reserve Bank of Australia Tuesday will announce its official interest rate after board meeting.
Yesterday the Australian share market ended lower. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 fell 36.3 points yesterday, or 0.91 per cent, at 3934.9, while the broader All Ordinaries was down 35.4 points, or 0.89 per cent, to 3933.6. Overnight the stronger commodities prices in New York may boost the local market today.
