The Australian share market Thursday broke its losing streak. The market was boosted by US President Barack Obama's first State of the Union address to Congress. Mr. Obama said jobs must be the number one priority in 2010 and offered proposals for financial reform, education, health care reform, government spending, national security and more. At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index rose 28.7 points, or 0.62 per cent, to 4673.3, while the broader All Ordinaries lifted 0.59 per cent to 4697.7.
The Australian sharemarket posted a sharp loss for second straight day to a one-month closing low on Friday. The market pressured by worries about a slowdown in China and concerns over U.S. President Barack Obama's proposed stricter regulations on banks. At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index and the broader All Ordinaries index both tumbled 1.6 per cent. For the week, the ASX 200 fell 3.2 per cent, its worst weekly return in 12 weeks.
The Australian sharemarket closed slightly higher on Wednesday. Most of the early gains boosted by BHP Billiton's report of strong half-year production were offset by the losses after news that some Chinese banks have received verbal orders to stop lending for the rest of this month. At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index added 7 points, or 0.1 per cent, at 4868.2, while the broader All Ordinaries index gained 5.5 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 4895.1.
The Australian shares closed with little change on Friday. The market rebounded from early losses as a surprise guidance upgrade by Commonwealth Bank pushed the financial sector higher in late trade. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index gained 1.6 points to 4899.6, while the broader All Ordinaries index added 0.1 point to 4929.5.
Yesterday the Australian sharemarket gained as the Chinese government released a report showing that China's exports jumped 17.7 per cent in December. The Australian dollar was stronger on Monday on the positive Chinese trade data and improved domestic jobs data. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index advanced 38.6 points, or 0.8 per cent, at 4950.7, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 39 points, or 0.8 per cent, to 4981.2.
Australian share market ended the first week of 2010 with a 15-month high as banking shares rebounded on Friday from the falls in previous session, offsetting losses in resources sector. At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index rose 12.7 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 4912.1, while the broader All Ordinaries index advanced 11.7 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 4942.2.
Australian stocks ended flat on Wednesday as shares gave up early gains in the afternoon dragged by banks. Miners advanced as investors were optimistic about the iron ore prices. At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 1.6 points at 4925.9 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index lifted 7.7 points, or 0.15 per cent, to 4947.2 points.
The Australian shares edged higher on the first trading day of 2010. Energy stocks surged amid expectations the oil price will continue to rise this year. At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index advanced 5.7 points, or 0.1 per cent, at 4876.3 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index gained 7.1 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 4889.8.
The Australian share market closed lower on Friday hit by National Australia Bank and Telstra. At close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index fell 19.8 points, or 0.42 per cent, to 4650.5 while the broader All Ordinaries lost 17.7 points, or 0.38 per cent, at 4671.9. The Australian dollar fell to a fresh 10-week low on Friday and closed at US$0.8888.
