Korea's Samsung Electronics (SEO:005930) was forecast to account for more than 20 percent of the global handset market for the first time, according to market research firm Strategy Analytics.

Samsung Electronics has substantially raised its global market share from 16 percent in Q1 to 19.2 percent in Q2.

Nokia (NYSE:NOK) is still the leader in overall global market share for mobile phones, but Samsung ranks first in mobile phone sales in the United States and Western Europe with 25% market share in the second quarter. Samsung sold 22.2 million mobile phones in the two regions.

Samsung Electronics said that its sales for the first half of this year jumped 12.3 percent on-year, totaling 39.6 trillion won, buoyed by strong overseas demand. However, Samsung's domestic sales declined during the first half as the Korean telecommunications market was affected by the global economy downturn.
